As someone with coeliac disease, finding safe and appealing gluten-free options when eating out has always been a struggle.

Far too often, I’ve had to miss out on sharing meals with friends or indulge in a scrumptious afternoon tea.

But as of Wednesday, 2nd August 2023, I bring exciting news – Marks & Spencer became the first UK-wide retailer to offer an entirely gluten-free afternoon tea, priced at just £10 per person.

Let’s take a closer look at what it’s all about, shall we?!

A Standout Gluten-Free Offering That Doesn’t Compromise on Taste

M&S’s new gluten-free afternoon tea includes an award-winning New Yorker sandwich filled with mature cheddar, roasted red peppers and mayo on gluten-free bread.

There’s also a fruit scone with strawberry jam and clotted cream, a fresh berry medley fruit pot, and a rich dark chocolate and hazelnut crispy treat.

All items are confirmed gluten-free and sealed for safety. You can also add Prosecco or alcohol-free fizz for £5 extra.

As a long-time M&S shopper, I’m thrilled they’ve put together such a delicious range of gluten-free baked goods, sandwiches and sweets so we coeliacs don’t have to miss out.

The gluten-free fruit scone with clotted cream sounds just as tasty as a normal scone.

And the chocolate hazelnut crispy sounds like an indulgent gluten-free dessert treat. The fact that it’s the same affordable price as their classic tea makes it even more appealing.

A Major Milestone for Gluten-Free Dining Options in the UK

The new gluten-free afternoon tea offering is a real milestone for UK retailers providing safe, tasty food options for people like me with coeliac disease or gluten intolerance.

Having appealing gluten-free choices makes a huge difference in being able to enjoy dining out without worry.

For years I’ve avoided cafés and coffee shops because so few provide real gluten-free options beyond a plain salad or dry sandwich.

But M&S is showing that with care and consideration for special dietary needs, delicious gluten-free treats can be created without compromise. The perfect fluffy scones and chocolate treats prove it’s possible.

Their afternoon tea makes days out with friends, baby showers, and me-time treats accessible for us coeliacs again. And it opens up possibilities for eating out that previously seemed off limits. Afternoon tea is back on the menu!

A Positive Sign of Growing Gluten-Free Offerings in Future

I hope the introduction of an M&S gluten free afternoon tea option will encourage more eateries to expand their gluten-free offerings.

There is clearly demand for safe, tasty options from those with medical dietary needs or lifestyle preferences.

With the right knowledge and preparation, safe and tasty gluten-free dishes can absolutely be achieved, as M&S has demonstrated.

For now, I’m thrilled to have afternoon tea back on the menu, thanks to Marks & Spencer!

I can’t wait to book in and indulge in their scones, sandwiches and gluten-free treats soon.

It’s just the latest sign that major brands are taking food allergies and intolerances seriously. That gives me real hope for more gluten-free inclusiveness in the future.

But the question remains – when will you try yours? Let me know in the comments below!
