Visiting Poland For The First Time: My Personal Experience

Once I’d gotten past the sea of stag (bachelor) groups in Krakow Airport, it didn’t take me long to discover the vibrant culture and stunning landscapes that Poland has to offer.

I’d been meaning to visit this wonderful country for a long while. Had it not been for a certain something (I’m looking at you, global pandemic!), I’d have done so way back in 2019.

But as the old saying goes – better late than never!

Thanks to having my beautiful girlfriend (who just so happens to be Polish!) and her family by my side, I couldn’t have asked for a better first visit here.

Now, having finally added Poland to my ever-growing list of countries I’ve visited, it’s safe to say it won’t be my last time.

In Zakopane, there were spectacular views in every direction, with a hugely alpine feel to it. Almost like Poland’s very own version of Switzerland!

Staying at Stara Polana, part of the Apartamenty Zakopane complex, made my visit even more enjoyable.

The spacious apartment had all the amenities I needed for a comfortable stay, including free Wi-Fi access, a fully equipped kitchen, and access to a Spa complex with a pool, sauna, and jacuzzi (the latter of which, unfortunately, I didn’t use).

Being centrally located allowed me to easily walk to nearby attractions, including the upside-down house, local supermarkets, shops, and much more.

Overall, my first time visiting Poland was both exciting and enlightening as I immersed myself in unique experiences while successfully maintaining my gluten-free lifestyle.

Gluten-Free Basics – Navigating Zakopane & Krakow as a Celiac

You’ll feel a sense of relief and excitement as you discover the essentials of navigating gluten-free cuisine in these beautiful Polish cities.

If you’ve got access to your own kitchen as we did, you won’t have to go far to find gluten-free essentials in local supermarkets.

Keep your eyes peeled for ‘bezglutenowe’ (gluten-free) labels on products and menus as well – knowing some local terminology (and/or enlisting the help of Google Translate) will make label-reading tips much more straightforward!

When it comes to dining etiquette, don’t be shy about asking servers or chefs about gluten-free options; they may even have specific recommendations to ensure a safe eating experience.

It’s also helpful to carry some travel snacks with you, like gluten-free granola bars or trail mix, just in case you find yourself hungry between meals without immediate access to allergy-friendly choices.

By being prepared with knowledge on ingredient substitutions, label reading tips, dining etiquette, and travel snacks, you’ll soon realize that exploring Zakopane & Krakow while maintaining a gluten-free diet is not only possible but truly enjoyable!

Navigating the local cuisine can be a bit tricky, especially when you’re dealing with language barriers and cross-contamination risks.

However, armed with some research resources and knowledge of safe food alternatives, you’ll find that it’s not impossible to enjoy delicious Polish dishes without compromising your health.

Start by familiarizing yourself with common ingredients in Polish foods so you know which ones are naturally gluten-free.

This will also help you identify potential sources of cross-contamination when ordering at restaurants or cafes.

Brush up on some basic Polish phrases related to gluten-free needs, or consider using translation apps to communicate more effectively.

Don’t hesitate to ask questions about how dishes are prepared; most establishments will be happy to accommodate special dietary requirements.

Additionally, leverage online resources like blogs, forums, or dedicated gluten-free travel websites for recommendations on places offering gluten-free options in Zakopane and Krakow.

Remember that it’s always better to be over-prepared than under-prepared – this way, you can focus on enjoying the rich flavors of Poland instead of worrying about what’s safe for you to eat!

Zakopane Recommendations: Two Restaurants I Tried

While exploring Zakopane, I had the opportunity to try out two great restaurants that I’d highly recommend:

Not only did they cater to my gluten-free needs, but they also offered delicious meals and excellent service.

I’ll share my experiences at these eateries and why they’re great options for anyone visiting this beautiful area.

Pensjonat Moje Tatry

Looking for a fantastic gluten-free dining experience near Zakopane? Pensjonat Moje Tatry has got you covered with its entirely gluten-free menu and delicious options to satisfy your cravings.

This gem of a restaurant is located in Biały Dunajec, a small village nearby Zakopane, making it the perfect stop after a day of exploring the local tourist attractions or engaging in outdoor activities.

My first visit to Pensjonat Moje Tatry was an absolute delight. I indulged in ogórki kiszone (pickled cucumbers), kotlet schabowy (pork cutlet), pieczone ziemniaki (roasted potatoes), sernik na zimno (cold cheesecake), and drożdżówka (a sweet bread roll which we ate the following morning).

The flavors were amazing and truly showcased the local cuisine. And on our penultimate day, we even returned here, ordering takeout instead.

This time, I had kwaÅ›nica soup – followed by karkówka (pork neck), ziemniaki i surówka z czerwonej kapusty i buraków z octem (potatoes and red cabbage salad with beets and vinegar).

With such variety at this establishment, anyone seeking gluten-free accommodations will find themselves right at home!

So next time you’re in Zakopane or Krakow, make sure to include Pensjonat Moje Tatry on your list of must-try restaurants.

Bistro Las

Bistro Las was the second establishment I ate out at in Zakopane, with our other meals enjoyed either in the apartment or in Krakow on our last day.

Admittedly, my options were relatively limited in Bistro Las as a lot of their dishes were pretty spicy, according to the staff member I conversed with.

I’ll hold my hands up and say I’m not a huge fan of spicy foods!

Nevertheless, I enjoyed a delicious Zupa pomidorowa z ryżem (Tomato soup with rice). It was rather delicious if I do say so myself!

I did have to eat a sandwich I’d prepared earlier that day after this, as I was still hungry. But I did quite enjoy my first time trying soup with rice.

Apparently, it’s common to eat soup like this in Poland. Where I’m from, not so much. But it’s safe to say, I’m sold!

Krakow Recommendations: Plenty of Options

During my brief visit to Krakow, I stumbled upon Pizza Loft, a delightful restaurant that offers plenty of options for everyone.

Despite being short on time, I managed to enjoy their delicious and diverse menu.

It’s definitely a spot worth checking out if you’re in the city and looking for a tasty meal with great variety.

Pizza Loft

Gluten-free pizza and gluten-free beer from the Pizza Loft Restaurant in Krakow, Poland

At Pizza Loft, I had the pleasure of eating one of the best gluten-free pizzas I’ve ever had.

With a refreshing gluten-free beer to wash it all down, I can honestly say it went down a treat!

The mouthwatering toppings include local favorites such as bekon (bacon) and oscypek (smoked cheese), which combine to create my chosen pizza – Pizza góralska z sosem pomidorowym.

With their commitment to providing an enjoyable dining experience even for those with dietary restrictions, it’s no wonder that Pizza Loft has become a must-visit destination for any gluten-free traveler in Poland.

Before leaving, a staff member recommended I try some of their gluten-free walnut cake. Admittedly, I wasn’t sure about this as it’s not something I’d usually go for.

But having enjoyed this the day after arriving back home, I definitely made the right decision!

Accommodation Tips: Great Accommodation At A Reasonable Price

Finding a fantastic place to stay at an affordable price is easier than you might think, so let’s dive into some accommodation tips for your trip!

When searching for affordable options in Zakopane, I highly recommend checking out VIP Apartamenty Zakopane, where I stayed with my girlfriend and her family.

We stayed in Stara Polana, IVO, a spacious apartment that can accommodate up to 8 adults and offers top-notch amenities like a fully equipped kitchenette and access to a spa complex.

The location is convenient for exploring the area surrounding the accommodation. You can easily walk into the town centre of Zakopane, and the nearby transport links make venturing further afield a breeze.

How Would I Rate Poland as A Celiac? (and Would I Return?)

So, how does Poland stack up for a celiac traveler, and would you want to go back?

I must say, my experience in Poland was fantastic. Not only did I feel safe and comfortable with the food options available, but also the overall atmosphere made it a great place to explore.

My girlfriend being from Poland definitely helped make my time in Zakopane and Krakow an even more enjoyable experience.

Sure, I was lucky enough to be spending my trip with native Polish speakers, but you can easily get by even if you don’t speak the language.

Here are the reasons why:

  1. Celiac-friendly attractions: In both cities, we found plenty of restaurants offering gluten-free menu items and knowledgeable staff who understood celiac disease. This made dining out a stress-free experience.
  2. Communication barriers: Language assistance came in handy as not everyone spoke English fluently; however, most people were eager to help and accommodate my needs.
  3. Travel itinerary: We managed to plan our trip efficiently by researching online beforehand and seeking advice from locals once we arrived – making sure every destination on our journey catered to my dietary requirements.
  4. Cultural cuisine options: Lastly, one of the highlights was indulging in traditional Polish dishes that were adapted into delicious gluten-free versions without losing their authentic taste.

Given all these positive aspects during my visit – including the beautiful sights, rich history, and warm hospitality – I would undoubtedly return again for another memorable adventure through this charming country.

My Trip to Poland In A Nutshell

To conclude, I can proudly say that my gluten-free adventure through Zakopane and Krakow was an absolute blast from start to finish!

The picturesque landscapes, rich history, and delectable dining options made for a truly unforgettable experience.

I can wholeheartedly say that Poland exceeded my expectations as a celiac traveler.

I’m already daydreaming about returning to this magical land of pierogi-filled delights and cobblestone streets.

So if you’re considering a gluten-free getaway, don’t hesitate – Poland awaits!
